What Tricount does better
Credit where it's due. These are real reasons to pick Tricount over dvup, and pretending otherwise would just make the rest of this page less believable.
- It's genuinely free. No paid tier at all, and no ads — which dvup can't say, because dvup's free tier does show them.
- It moves real money in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium through request links, free via iDEAL, Bancontact and Sofort. dvup only routes you to your own payment app.
- Link a bunq account and card spend gets added to a tricount automatically. dvup has nothing that captures spend for you.
- Simplify debts, currency conversion and offline entry all work, at parity with dvup.
- One-tap Splitwise import, so switching costs almost nothing.
- Huge installed base and a 4.9 rating from thousands of reviews.
Where dvup wins
- Guests pay from a link without installing anything. Tricount's share link still expects people to open the app.
- AI receipt scanning on the free plan. Every Tricount mention of receipts is about storing a photo — no vendor page mentions reading one.
- Per-item splitting and per-item tax. Tricount's custom split sets amounts per person, not per receipt line.
- Rails beyond four European countries. Tricount's request links are NL/DE/FR/BE only, and card repayments there carry a 2.5% fee.
- No 50-person ceiling. Tricount caps a tricount at 50 people including you.
- Recurring expenses. Tricount doesn't document one, even on its own shared-house page.
- A who-owes-whom picture, rather than a net-position figure.
What it costs
Free, and that's the only tier. No subscription, no in-app purchases on the US or GB App Store. The old Tricount Premium was retired in the bunq rebuild, which also took CSV/PDF export, Personal mode and saved custom splits with it.
dvup is free to split, track and settle, with a monthly allowance of receipt scans on the free plan. dvup+ is $2.99/month or $29.99/year if you scan a lot. The free tier shows ads.
Choose dvup if: You need scanning that reads the receipt, per-item tax, a group over 50 people, recurring rent, or a way to get paid back outside those four markets.
Try it without switching
You don't have to migrate anything to kick the tires. Settle a group right now with the free who owes who calculator, or work out the household with the rent split calculator. No sign-up.
Questions
Is Tricount really free?
Yes. As of July 2026 there's no paid tier and no in-app purchases on the US or GB App Store, and bunq states it's ad-free. The old Tricount Premium was retired in the bunq rebuild, which also removed CSV/PDF export, Personal mode and saved custom splits.
Does Tricount scan receipts?
Not in the way dvup does. Every Tricount page we could find describes attaching or storing a photo of a receipt, never reading the lines off it. If you want the app to pull items and tax off the bill, that's dvup's side.
Can you pay each other inside Tricount?
In the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium, yes — request links settle free via iDEAL, Bancontact or Sofort, and card repayments carry a 2.5% fee. Outside those four countries you're back to sorting it out yourselves. dvup instead deep-links you into Interac, Pix, UPI or Venmo and never touches the money.
How many people can join a Tricount?
Up to 50, including you. dvup has no equivalent ceiling.
Which should I actually pick?
If you're on a trip in Western Europe splitting evenly and you want free with no ads, Tricount is genuinely hard to beat, and it imports from Splitwise in one tap. Pick dvup if you want the receipt read for you, per-item tax, recurring rent, or to get paid back outside those four markets.
